BJP demands removal of Chidambaram

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday demanded the removal of Home Minister P. Chidambaram over a police lathi-charge on the party's youth wing activists a day earlier in the national capital.

Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj told reporters that Chidambaram, being in charge of law and order in the national capital, should be removed.

"We demand from the prime Minister that he (Chidambaram) be sacked," Swaraj told reporters here.

About 60 BJP Yuva Morcha activists were injured Tuesday, the BJP leader said, when police broke their demonstration against alleged irregularities by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the 2010 Commonwealth Games preparations. Officials said three police personnel were also injured.

Swaraj said the BJP had forced adjournment of both houses of parliament to protest the lathi-charge on youth activists in Delhi and the killing of four protesting farmers in police firing near Pune Tuesday.

"The UPA government is not only corrupt, but also repressive," Swaraj charged.
