Ammonia refrigeration is used on many commercial fishing vessels, particularly those that freeze or process their catch onboard. It is a very common refrigerant because of its wide availability, simple manufacturing process, and relatively low cost. However, ammonia is a toxic gas, and its use does present hazards. Exposure causes serious and sometimes fatal injuries, including ammonia burns on the eyes and lungs, industrial asthma, blindness, and other pulmonary conditions. In addition, ammonia is flammable and can cause explosions when exposed to high heat. https://www.marineinjurylaw.com/amp/ammonia-gas-leaks-on-commercial-fishing-processing-vessels.html

Yep, ice can harbour dangerous contaminants; imagine the gullible public eating/relishing the fish stored in such ice?

These sort of incidents where there are absolutely no safety precautions, even in mechanised trawlers, for the safety of fishermen is just not acceptable! The owners of these trawlers seem to be exploiting the labour brought from outside the state as most localites are hesitant to do these jobs; it's akin to manual cleaning of septic tanks, which has been banned since long! The authorities should find out what gas or SOME CHEMICALS USED TO KEEP THE CATCH FRESH that it was that led to this Catastrophy! Moreover, it's more shocking to note that two laborers found later were not accounted for in the beginning! One can imagine what sort of smelly/chemical tainted fish these people supply to the gullible public?
