Raipur airhostess’ killer hangs self in Mumbai police lock-up

Mumbai, Sep 8 (IANS): Vikram Atwal, the prime accused in the killing of a trainee airhostess Rupal Ogrey of Raipur, Chhattisgarh on September 3, has allegedly ended life by hanging himself in the police lockup, hours before he was to be produced before a court for extending his police remand, officials said here on Friday.

Atwal, 40, was nabbed early on Monday by a team of the Powai Police Station, barely hours after he had slit the throat of Ogrey, 24, at her posh home in Marol, Andheri east.

A resident of Tunga in the Marol area, he was due to be produced before a court on Friday afternoon for extension of his custodial remand.

Early in the day, he had gone to the lock-up toilet and then did not come out for long, after which the police broke the door and found him hanging there with his own clothes from a pipe.

Atwal’s family comprising his wife and two daughters have been informed of his death and further investigations are underway.

    This case looks like a backlash against uncalled for vehemence.... The woman in her success high must have behaved badly with lower category workers .... Many keep quiet but not all... When you instigate often you have to be prepared for the backlash... Nowadays people don't care for showoffs.... Not defending the guy's actions but definitely a warning sign for people thinking no end of themselves.... We may remember the close miss of Bombay model of coastal origin.... Her mother's behavior nearly doomed her but for her good stars.... RIP to the departed souls....

    This murder case seems to be getting murkier! If I am not mistaken toilets in the police lockups are so made that it's not possible for a person to hang oneself; also, how can one hang oneself with one's (men's) clothes?? The concerned person was only an "accused"; now will the file be closed just because the "accused" is no more, just based on his statement given to the interrogating cops?? Very mysterious...... incidents happening....... somewhat analogus to Sowjanya case?

    This is going to happen for all the rape attempts & murders because of our bad, corrupt justice system. He should have been hanged in public instantly for killing a women for his lust. This man is not suitable to live on this earth, good that he hanged himself, otherwise many middlemen might have minted money from both sides in the name of giving justice by keeping the case alive for decades.

    Bro, Please 🙏 understand, he was only an accused; tomorrow somebody powerful could very easily accuse you, me or any one for a crime committed by someone else and the cops can easily force you to give a statement to accept the same! This sort of confession in custody does hold any good in a court of law unless sufficient evidence is provided! Just see what happened in the Sowjanya case; an innocent mentally unstable person was put behind bars for 12 years while the real culprits are still not___found; imagine if the courts were not there, this innocent person would have been hanged by now! Please don't underestimate the value of the justice system! This is not jungle raj brother!!
