Udupi, Sep 9: “Teachers are real potters. They light the lamp after dispelling the darkness. Nation pays homage and respect to all the teachers on Teacher’s Day. Dr Radhakrishnan was the first person who thought to celebrate his birthday as Teacher’s Day,” said Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop diocese of Udupi.
He was speaking at the Teacher’s Day celebration and felicitation programme organized by the Catholic Education Society of Udupi diocese (CESU) on Saturday September 9 at Anugraha Pastoral Centre.
In his presidential note, Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo said, “We cannot give anything in return to our teachers. We should respect and thank them. We should respect them in our daily life too. We are incomplete without a good teacher. Our teacher always encourages us to do better in our lives. I congratulate all the teachers for their service. Student achievers are an inspiration to your companions. Continue the struggle for greater achievements in life.”
Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, vicar general diocese of Udupi and vice president of CESU was the chief guest for the programme. In his address to the gathering, he said, “Student achievers continue this spirit of achieving further. I congratulate all the student achievers and also the teachers who have been honoured today. Teaching profession teaches all professions. In this modern world, Dr Abdul Kalam is a model to all of us. We need to use the available opportunities the most.”
Guest of honour, Ganapathi K, DDPI Udupi said, “There are many distractions in the society today. But we have to show only the good path to the students and help them to go in that way. We need to recognize the talents of the students and support and provide necessary training to upgrade their talents. Every parent expects their child to be a good citizen and this mission is in our hands. Dr Abdul Kalam used to remember his teachers who inspired him to become a scientist. What greater can we expect as teachers than this? Only teachers have a chance to shape a good citizen of the society. Let us respect our profession. Let us not compare our profession with others. Let us be happy with what we have. We should love the subject we teach. This will bring new things out of us. Let us treat the students as our own children. The real education begins as we begin to be professionals. We will continue to support the CESU in all its activities.”
Felicitation to retired teaching and non-teaching staff, awardee teachers, top scorers and top scoring schools was held.
Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, vice-president of CESU was also honoured.
Fr Vincent Crasta, secretary CESU, welcomed the gathering.
Dr Vincent Alva, principal Milagres College Kallianpur, Dr Gerald Monis, principal St Mary's College Shirva, Fr Rolwin Aranha, principal Don Bosco English medium school Shirva, and Eliza Vaz, principal Christ School Manipal read the names of the honorary.
Saudhamini Rao and Loyleeta D’Souza compered the programme.
