Udupi, Sep 14: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has requested for an outer harbour in Malpe and put forth other demands to the state minister of fisheries, Mankal Vaidya.

He called on the minister and requested him to take the initiative to obtain approval for various projects relating to the fisheries department including those submitted to the prime minister through the state government.

He requested for an outer harbour with the capacity to anchor about 6,000 boats at Malpe Padukere as there is scarcity of space due to increase in the number of boats. He also requested for construction of a 500-metre jetty at Padukere bridge and anchorage for 100 metre country boats.

The MLA requested that fisheries department should obtain the land soon after the expiry of lease to Tebma ShipYard for fisheries activities, implementation of loan to fisherwomen at zero per cent interest, sea ambulance, breakwall to prevent sea erosion, decrease the time limit to reconstruct wooden boats to five years and steel boats to seven years, dredging works every year, systematic supply of diesel and kerosene oil to fisheries boats and formation of interstate fisheries coordination committee.

The MLA suggested the minister to chair a meeting with the leaders of fisheries organisations in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada to discuss fisheries development and issues in detail and find solutions.
