Bengaluru, Sep 15: The government authorised vehicle scrap centre will begin functioning soon at Devanahalli. Vehicles that are more than 15 years old will be scrapped at this centre.

The state government has given the contract to three private companies to establish Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF). The approval is expected to be finalised by the end of September. Two more facilities will be established at Koratagere of Tumakuru and Koppal.

According to union road transport and highway ministry all vehicles that are 15 years or more old should be scrapped. There are around 60 RVSFs in India. But Karnataka did not have a single one till date.

Mallikarjuna C, additional transport commissioner (Implementation south), said, “All government vehicles that are more than 15 years old will be scrapped. Private vehicles that are 15 years old or more and without fitness certificate (FC) should be scrapped mandatorily. But vehicles with FC will not be scrapped.

“The vehicles that will be taken for scrapping should not have any police cases pending against them. Also, no traffic fines should be pending. RVSFs will scrap the vehicles in environment-friendly way. Hazardous wastes will be handled in a scientific manner," he said.

“Each facility will cost around Rs 10 crore. The Devanahalli facility is expected to begin functioning by the end of December. After scrapping the vehicle, the owner will be given COD or destruction proof certificate. This can be used to avail discount while buying a new vehicle,” he said.
