Mangaluru, Sep 16: A District Level Wrestling Tournament was organized at St Agnes PU College in collaboration with the District Pre University Education Board in the college auditorium on September 15. The programme began with a soulful invocation to the divine, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. C D Jayanna, deputy director, Pre-University Education was the eminent guest of honour, while Harish Kumar, national level wrestler and kabaddi player was the esteemed chief guest on the occasion.
The chief guest in his address spurred the contestants to give of their best and advocated commitment, dedication and fitness. Wrestling, he said, is a dynamic sport that requires complex skills and understanding the finesse of the sport will give one a tactical edge over their opponent.
Wrestling is an ancient individual sport that tests the endurance, skill and strength of the two wrestlers who try to establish their supremacy over their rival. As a sport, wrestling is currently enjoying a huge wave of popularity as it endows young people with concentration, discipline, stamina and helps them achieve goals, equips them with the qualities necessary to face life head on and provides a wealth of opportunities to excel in life. The matches made for an amazing experience and the nail-biting finish kept the audience glued to their seats.
Shailaja, Kannada, lecturer compered the programme with flair, Jayashree, Physical director welcomed the august gathering while Lavina Lobo, department of physics proposed the vote of thanks on the occasion.
Dr Sr Maria Roopa AC, joint secretary, St Agnes Group of Institutions, principal Sr Norine D’Souza, vice principal Sr Janet Sequeira, Jayashree physical director, faculty, PTA members and students were an integral part of the event. The other dignitaries present were Arun Kumar, sports coordinator, DK, the referees, coaches, volunteers and physical directors of other pre-university colleges in the district.
As many as 15 girls’ teams and 18 boys’ teams participated enthusiastically in the tournament and won prizes. In the girls’ category, St Agnes PU College bagged the overall championship, while SDM Ujire PU College secured the runners-up trophy. In the boys’ category St Aloysius PU College were the winners, while Yenepoya PU College secured the runners-up trophy.
