Mangaluru, Sep 18: A day to go for Ganeshotsava celebrations and the preparations are in full swing across the coastal region. The preparations for the idols of Lord Ganesha are almost complete and the arrangements are underway to enshrine the idols of Lord Ganesha in public.

Districts like Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kasargod and Kodagu are all set for the grand Ganeshotsava celebrations and the city also seeks a spike in demand for flowers, fruits and sugarcane.

On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, sellers from neighbouring districts have settled in the city to carry out their business. Cities have witnessed huge quantities of flowers including chrysanthemum, rose, jasmine, kanagile and kakada flowers.

The sugarcane business is also booming. Farmers from different parts of the district have supplied sugarcane to the market and have also engaged in selling these sugarcanes in Udupi and other parts of the Mangaluru city.

As the government has banned the idols made up of Plaster of Paris, the demand for clay idols have increased. The district administration has also declared holiday for the schools and colleges on Tuesday instead of Monday.

With the purpose of maintaining public peace and order, the deputy commissioner of Udupi district Dr K Vidyakumari issued an order declaring dry day on September 21 and 23 and banned the sale of liquor.

Over 900 police have been deployed across the district. As per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, use of sound systems beyond 10 pm is also banned.
