Bhopal, Aug 16 (IANS) About 150 survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster in Bhopal Tuesday urged President Pratibha Patil to intervene for restoring the constitutional rights of civil society activists Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal and others who were detained in New Delhi in the morning.
Five organizations fighting for the cause of Bhopal gas survivors said to the president: "You are well aware corruption at all levels of the central and state governments and the judiciary has played a significant role in the denial of justice and adequate relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal. As victims of systemic corruption for the last 27 years, we are part of the national campaign for a Jan Lokpal Bill and consider it to be one of the necessary elements for ending the continuing disasters in Bhopal."
"So, we urge you to ensure that peaceful and democratic protest actions in favour of a Jan Lokpal Bill, in any part of the country, are provided constitutional protection," it added.
