Beltangady: Wild elephants trample upon tree saplings in forest dept nursery, destroy 3200 plants

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (MS)

Beltangady, Sep 24: A herd of wild elephants entered the forest department nursery at Mundaje Kaup on Friday night and destroyed huge number of tree saplings.

More than 3200 plants of jackfruit, bamboo, pine and other plants were trampled upon by the herd. It is suspected that two elephants including a baby must have attacked the nursery.

There is a possibility that the same herd which was spotted at Nertane must have attacked at Mundaje as well.

Last year too, the wild elephants had destroyed plants in the same nursery. This nursery is situated at a distance of just 20 meters from the national highway.

Deputy zonal forest officer Hariprasad, personnel Sadananda and nursery watcher Umesh have informed about the incident to Mohan Kumar, zonal forest officer.

Rampant destruction of wild life habitats (forests) by greedy humans has made the life and property of inhabitants dotting these forests very miserable; this is bound to exponentially increase as the drinking water sources for these wild animals, along with food sources, has already dried even before the end of the monsoon season! Very critical situation for people owning large estates/resorts around these reserve forests as the temperatures start rising again!!
