Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Wednesday closed 117 points up, giving up some of its intra-day gains.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,782.24 points, closed at 16,848.37 points (provisional), up 117.43 points or 0.7 percent compared to its previous close at 16,730.94 points.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too ended 0.54 percent up at 5,063.1 points.
The midcap and smallcap indices on the BSE, however, closed lower, while the broader market index, BSE 500, ended flat.
The market breadth at the BSE was tilted towards the negative, with 887 stocks moving up, compared to 1,961 on the decline and 88 remaining unchanged.
