Mangaluru, Sep 26: Both the ruling BJP and Congress in Mangaluru City Corporation were engaged in a verbal spat after Mangaluru North MLA Y Bharath Shetty recommended Mangaluru City Corporation to name Surathkal Junction circle as Shri Vinayaka Damodar Savarkar Circle.
Taking a dig at BJP-led MCC, corporator and Congress leader A C Vinayaraj said as many as 14 organisations have opposed naming the Surathkal Junction Circle after Shri Vinayaka Damodar Savarkar.
“Fourteen organisations mean not individuals but they are organizations. Hundreds of people have opposed renaming the circle after Vinayaka Damodar Savarkar. Instead, the MCC can rename the Surathkal Junction Circle after Subbayya Shetty who fought to provide land for the poor. Organisations also expressed to rename the circle after Koti Chennayya or Shri U Shrinivas Mallya who strived for the development of the district," A C Vinayaraj said.
He was speaking during the general meeting of MCC here on Tuesday, September 26.
Chief whip Premananand Shetty urged Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur to send the proposal for approval to the government.
The Congress corporators also said that circles and buildings should be renamed after leaders born locally and that those who have contributed to the welfare of society should be remembered.
Congress corporators also congratulated the opposition's move to rename Bondel Circle after Thripadi Kavi Sarvajna.
On the occasion, Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur congratulated opposition party leader of City Corporation Praveen Alva for being appointed as opposition party leader in the Council by his party.
“Who was present during the beginning of the MCC meeting lauded the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage Chandrayaan-3 to be successfully inserted into the lunar orbit. Indian leadership has proved its leadership by co-opting the African Union into the G-20 as a full member. Prime Minister's women’s reservation bill gave a powerful message of gender equality. India will become a world power soon under the leadership of Narendra Modi,” said MLA Vedavyas Kamath.
After the MLA left the meeting venue, corporator AC Vinayaraj said “We should also remember the initial contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in forming The Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), which later became ISRO.”
Corporator Praveen Chandra Alva said people who are homeless in the city have high expectations of the MCC. “They need a house to lead a peaceful life. When Congress was ruling, the council had decided to provide for houses to the homeless. There was scope to provide houses for the homeless when the ruling BJP in MCC ruled in the state and at the Centre. There are 3.5 acres of land in Kunjathbail which belongs to the MCC where about 400 houses can be constructed. The vacant land should be protected from encroachment by fencing it,” Alva said.
He also slammed council corporators for not installing the LED lights in the city.
He also alleged tenders have been floated in two phases for collecting solid waste management cess. He said the tenders should be ideally floated in four phases and the MCC should provide all the necessary resources including manpower. He urged the MCC to cancel the present tender and frame a new DPR with proper rules and regulations. “The tenders should be invited again after a proper study. The council has also agreed to this,” Alva said.
Corporators also questioned how the officials could float tenders by keeping councilors in the dark.
Corporator Lancelot Pinto said that people in some wards are facing issues with drinking water and collection of solid wastes. The MCC should address this problem on a priority.
