Mangaluru, Sep 26: We know of hundreds of cases when online fraudsters have cheated people asking for OTP after calling the victims. However, more shocking is the fact that tricksters are siphoning off money by just using the biometric thumb impression, that too in government offices.
Following the government announcement to hike property registration fee with effect from October 1, members of the public are rushing to get their properties registered. In the meantime, fraudsters are having a field day with them becoming active while using government offices to cheat the public.
One needs to give a thumb impression for Kaveri 2 software in the sub-registrar’s office. After giving the biometric thumb impression, Aadhar documents are entered into computer and the registration process proceeds further. However, many people who have given their thumb impression in the sub-registrar office of the city have lost lacs of rupees from their accounts.
Complaints have been filed with the police in this connection. Police are verifying the issue at the sub-registrar’s office of the city. However, the police were clueless as the central control of Kaveri 2 software lies in Bengaluru. It is said that the issue has cropped up as Kaveri 2 software was implemented in haste.
Complaints of cyber fraudsters activating the Aadhar and misusing the payment mode are increasing. Cyber fraudsters are using new technologies to transfer funds online. There is no need for any OTP pin, CVV or bank details. If biometric fingerprints are used for any process fraudsters manage to loot a maximum of Rs 10,000 from bank accounts using unauthorised biometric equipment.
Fraudsters are cloning fingerprints from Aadhar cards and siphoning off money from the bank account without the knowledge of the citizens and that too without a OTP pin. The public need to be alert in such cases and download mAadhar from playstore and lock their biometric parameters.
In the last three weeks, 25 cases have been filed with CEN Police station Mangaluru city.
