Kolkata, Sep 27 (IANS): Even after a marathon 12-hours meeting of Jadavpur University's (JU) working committee that continued till the wee hours on Wednesday, the authorities failed to reach any conclusion as regards to implementing the anti-ragging measures as outlined by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and mandated by the Supreme Court.

JU insiders said that the failure on reaching any conclusion was mainly because of the objections raised by a section of the students’ unions who objected to certain proposals from the university authorities.

However, according to the interim vice chancellor of JU, Buddhadeb Sau, a proposal that has been unanimously passed by the working committee is regarding a separate students’ hostel for the freshers or first year students. It has been decided that the process is expected to be completed by October 10.

No decision has been reached on when the next meeting of the working committee on the matter will be held.

JU insiders said that the report of the internal probe committee of JU, constituted after the unfortunate ragging-related death of a fresher on August 10, was also submitted in the working committee meeting. However, no decision was reached on disciplinary actions against those students who were found guilty in the matter by the internal probe committee.

JU insiders said that the decision that has been opposed to the maximum by the section of the students’ unions is the one related to induction of retired defence personnel in the internal security team of the university.
