Over 11,000 dog bite incidents, two deaths from January to August in Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Sep 30: Dog bite incidents are on the rise in the district. From January and August this year, 11,407 cases dog bites are reported. Two have died because of dog bites in the same period.

Local officials, especially in rural areas are negligent in this matter. The reason for dog bites is the shortage of food to street dogs.

“Local city bodies like CMC, TMC, town panchayats and gram panchayats have yet to take animal birth control steps effectively. These have to be done in coordination with local officials at gram panchayat level. The animal husbandry department is ready to give necessary technical support to panchayats throughout the district in this regard,” said Dr Shankar Shetty, deputy director of district animal husbandry department.

Udupi DHO Dr Nagabhushana Udupa said, “Though tenders are called for ABC and sterilization programmes, most of the NGOs have not shown interest. Gram panchayats have to keep funds reserved to complete ABC programme in time limit.

“When the dog bites, people have to take treatment immediately. If the treatment is delayed the situation becomes worse. The government health centres and giving good medical treatment.”

Though I am an avid animal lover with a three pet dogs and five 🐱s in our house, I was always turning a blind eye to the stray dog and other animals menace; but when it happened to us personally when a number of our and neighborhood 🐶s were mauled to death by a pack of five stray dogs moving around in the area, some times in broad daylight; these dogs become very bold and aggressive during late nights when the place is desolate, and even attack passersby for no reason! Now, I have opened my horse blinders, and can empathize with the innocent people who have been victims to these stray dogs! Most strays are so well fed that they refuse to eat Parle Gluco biscuits! Thinking with an open mind and given the condition of human beings, especially the very old and very young, in this utterly poverty stricken country, I think too much attention is being given to domesticated stray animals at the cost of humans! Only those who can take full responsibility of their pets should be not troubled; rest all should be either given shelter and taken care of by animal lovers, and not left on the roads to being a nuisance and threat to human life!! IMHO, never feed strays in the city side as they're already well fed and well nourished by scouring food from garbage bins, outside meat shops etc.!!

I want to write here how arrival of dogs helped a section of workers in Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco), now Saudi Aramco. In Aramco, there are three types of housing complexes. One for senior staff, other for junior and intermediate staff and other one for domestic helpers. Both the houses of company staff were fully air conditioned. However domestic camp was not having air conditioning. In 1980 or so, company opened a kennel club (dogs club) and all the dogs were placed in air conditioned enclosures. After this, one domestic helper went and told the management, that even dogs have ac facility, but they do not have. Then only management eyes opened and immediately a work order was placed to put ac to all domestic helper quarters.

I went down memory lane when you brought back old memories to me - when we used to eagerly wait to go to the American school inside the complex for the Thursday evening/Friday mass services. We would anxiously expect some good samaritan sponsorer to sponsor our entry (4 people under one sponsorer) in the tight guarded complex of Saudi Aramco. Under the guise of "home visit" I still remember how we managed to gain entry through the main security gate where there were a bunch of bearded moron maniac Saudi Muslim guards at various counters. They would examine our Iqamahs (brown for non-Muslims), query the reason for our visit, ask for the sponsorer's name, his/her employee number, cellular number etc. He would then contact the sponsorer through the intercom and ask the names of guests whom he had sponsored. The sponsorer had to be in the complex for sponsoring our visit. The entire 400 acres of sprawling complex seemed like a heavenly paradise. One never felt like coming out and going through the rough experience of life. A truly memorable incident one would never like to forget.

Whoever wants to own a stray dog can adopt and accordingly take care ... Rest is all superficial sympathy .. All authorities upto panchayat level should be made to pay if stray dogs found ..cause injury ... etc .. Otherwise All dogs with proper identification.. collared kept in dog houses .. shelters ... All pay taxes direct or indirect .. meaning even ordinary soap GST tax I s There .. So first responsibility of any govt is to take care of its citizens .. Rabies is one of the most painful and if unfortunate can die in suffering. ...In addition various driving hazards .. ..people have lost Limbs and life because of stray dogs ..... Barking at night disturbance for sleep

Once in Bangalore while walking in a residential area a dog bit my daughter. She took treatment then on the ground of public safety by stray dogs i complaint to the Bangalore City corporation. I was assured and they arranged through an animal camp to collect this particular dog but it never happened. Then i wrote to Humanitarian office. They too wrote to me assuring but nothing happened. I made many calls all were attended in courtesy but they never collected the dog. One thing i doubt instead of dog if human being was there......he would have been in jail. What say!?

This is a delicate issue before people... While we have to take pity on these intelligent animals, they pose substantial amount of threat to people on streets... We see news of mauling of small kids by the pack of street dogs... When we walk on the streets we feel pity on them as they have no shelter and often eat rubbish leftovers... I just do not know what to say about solving this real problem with them as well as with us....

Send these animals to Maneka Gandhi or to the temple sage Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht who calls himself as Yogi Adityanath (in reality should be within the precincts of the temple and praying ardently for world peace) but the lure of seat, lavish life style, power and money has gone into his head instead of leading a religious life.

Why only to Menaka Gandhi or someone, why not to those who talks about cows and protection? They are also animals who need love and care. They should be given to all those people who are only talking about cows. Send them to gau shalas and to all bhatks who do not have any job. unfortunately we cant send them from Mundkur to Dubai as UAE they don't allow the street dogs to raom around.

Sterilizing dogs for birth control is not so easy, because they do not stand in queue to be sterilized like humans. This is the big problem for authorities.
