Mangaluru: Signboard without Kannada language at railway station removed

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 15: Controversy stirred at the Mangaluru Junction railway station when Southern Railway authorities installed a signboard that lacked information in the Kannada language.

The signboard, reading 'Mangaluru Junction Running Room,' displayed information solely in English, Hindi, and Malayalam. Members of railway unions, upon seeing the new signboard, expressed their outrage and filed complaints with Palakkad railway officials. Additionally, they shared their concerns on social media platforms to draw the public and authorities' attention to the matter.

In response to public and railway workers' union pressure, officials removed the signboard on Saturday. Local railway consumers are now urging the replacement of Malayalam with Kannada on the new signboard.

I totally agree that Malayalam should be removed , though I myself am a Keralite and a Malayalee. Tulu should be given prominence by Palakkad Railway division , if not then Kannada . Showing this kind of high handedness is not good. The flip side is the administration of Dakshina Kannada seems to be looking the other way while Malayalam is written over sidelining Kannada and Tulu.Tolerance by Mangaloreans must not be deemed as submissiveness. This Kannada ignorance continues as long as Mangalore is part of southern division and mallus continue to flock to Mangaluru. Our DK politicians have no interest in getting it moved under Konkan or SW division.

Removal of signboard without Kannada is a good sign to make the mallus understand the importance of a local language. They are expected to know that Mangaluru is called Mangalapuram and not vice versa. I’d suggest there must be Tulu on top of the new board followed by Kannada, Hindi and English.

This is nothing new. Businesses owned by Keralites by and large show no respect to Kannada language. Their sign boards mostly display their love for Malayalam with Kannada relegated to a corner or no Kannada at all. The licencing authority of MCC who is empowered to levy hefty fine or delicence the violators is in deep slumber.
