Puttur: Innovation Day celebrated at St Philomena College

Puttur, Oct 16: Innovation Day was observed at St Philomena College on October 13, as October 15 marks the birth anniversary of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, 11th President of India. This day is celebrated nationwide as ‘Innovation Day.’ The Humanities Association, in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC of the college), organized the Innovation Day event at Spandana Hall, including the inauguration of IIC events for the year 2023-24.

The event commenced with the dignitaries offering floral tribute to the portrait of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Anthony Prakash Monteiro, the principal, remarked, “Dr A P J Abdul Kalam served as the ‘People’s President’. His life inspired millions of people. He had a vision that motivated others to dream big and follow the same path.” Dr Anthony encouraged students to draw inspiration from Dr Kalam’s life story by reading his autobiography, ‘Wings of Fire’, and said that Dr Kalam played a crucial role in the development of Indian missile technology, aerospace advancements, and the advancement of science and technology in India. “He embodied simplicity even during his tenure as the President of India,” he said.

Dr A P Radhakrishna, the resource person at the event, emphasized that Dr Kalam’s life and teachings continue to serve as a beacon for generations to come. His contributions to Indian space technology are unparalleled. Despite being born into an ordinary family, he achieved extraordinary feats, demonstrating that one can overcome challenges and inspire every Indian.

Abhishek Suvarna, the coordinator of the Institution’s Innovation Council, addressed the gathering, stating, “The ministry of education (MOE) is responsible for the education policy of the country. It has undertaken various initiatives to elevate the standards of primary, higher, and professional education, setting numerous benchmarks. IIC, under the ministry of education, is a part of this effort. It has established IICs in colleges to nurture creativity and entrepreneurial skills among students, contributing to the nation’s economic growth.” He provided a brief overview of the events scheduled for the year in this regard.

Archana and her team offered prayers. Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, dean of the arts department, welcomed. Convener of college IIC Geetha Poornima presented introductory remarks. Swapna proposed a vote of thanks. Priya D’Souza compered the programme. Abhishek Suvarna, Capt Johnson David Sequiera, along with the faculty members and students of the arts department, actively participated in the event.
