Udupi, Oct 31: This runner in his seventies has stunned everyone by completing 25 marathons and also by winning a few. Michael Sequeira, hailing from Japkali Kudru in Hosala Barkur is an inspiration to all the youngsters and elderly to be healthy.

Michael Sequeira's extraordinary journey in the world of long-distance running is nothing short of inspirational. Having successfully completed 25 marathon races, he stands as a beacon of dedication, hard work, and nurtures deep love for running. But Michael's aspirations extend beyond the ordinary. His dream is to conquer a monumental goal - running 100 marathon races. It is a challenge that only a select few athletes have dared to undertake. But Michael's relentless pursuit of his dream is fuelled by daily workouts and rigorous practice routines that ensure his fitness and health remain at peak levels.

However, Michael is not just a dedicated runner, he is a winner as well. His collection of prizes and trophies from numerous marathon races attests to his exceptional skill and unyielding perseverance. His triumphant performances have made everyone proud.

Michael’s sporting heritage runs deep in his family. His elder brothers, Simplen and Bonnie, have held the position of SPA presidents, a clear reflection of the family's unwavering passion for sports.

Michael's dedication to sports extends far beyond mere spectatorship. He actively participates and excels in various running events. Back in 1974, during his high school days, he claimed the title of Udupi taluk level champion. His remarkable prowess in athletics shone during the two-day sports event for junior colleges at NJC Barkur in 1976-77, where he secured the first place in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and the 200X4 relay. Even in the 100 meters race, he narrowly missed the top spot, graciously settling for the second place.

Proving that his passion for running has not waned over the years, Michael recently secured the 2nd place in the Mumbai 10k marathon with an impressive timing of 1.05.13. His consistent excellence in the sport was further evident when he clinched the gold medal in a 10 km race for men above 60 years during the 'India Unity Marathon 2019' in Bandra, Mumbai, completing the race in just 1.5.53. Additionally, he claimed the 1st place in the 10K Thane Warrior marathon in the 60+ category, earning himself a well-deserved trophy and medal.
