Bengaluru, Nov 9: Children of workers should not be deprived of education under any circumstances and promised to do everything possible to serve them, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Addressing a function to distribute educational assistance to children of construction workers and other categories of workers for the year 2022-23 at Vidhana Soudha banquet hall, he said it was ironical that the working classes were contributing to creating wealth for the country while others were enjoying the benefits.

Even though the constitution has guaranteed equal opportunities and equitable share in the country’s wealth, the working classes were forced to struggle. The Congress government is doing its best to ensure an egalitarian society and the guarantees implemented were part of the efforts, he said.

The Chief Minister said it was heartening to note that as many as 9.60 lakh children were provided with educational assistance from the Workers Welfare Fund and pointed out that it was lamentable that 83% of the working class population were from the unorganised sector.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who addressed the programme, said the working classes, especially those involved in the construction and building sector were the real architects of the nation.

Mahatma Gandhi had said, ``I learnt the value of hard work by working hard,’’ Shivakumar said and pointed out that the value of hard work can never be undermined.

He said the Congress government was committed to improving the lot of workers and their children and was doing everything to empower them.

Labour Minister Santhosh Lad, Food and Civil Supplies Minister K H Muniyappa, Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, Chief Minister’s Political Secretary Govindaraju and others attended.

Dear Jossey Saldanha, Rajeja Waterfront, No more chaiwalas? Do you mean that basic education not needed for contesting election will be contested in the supreme court? I thought there is no educational background needed to lead us and it is as the Mahathma and Jai Bheem wanted in our constitution? Why this disappointment?
