Decision taken to appease minorities: B S Yediyurappa on hijab issue

Bengaluru, Dec 23 (IANS): Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Saturday condemned the Karnataka government's decision to lift the ban on hijab.

"I condemn the decision taken to appease minorities," he stated.

"This will not bring honor. As they are in power, they want to enact a political circus. Let us see how long this will go on. There will be no protest from the BJP regarding the matter. The people will teach the Congress government a lesson in the upcoming Lok Sabha election," he stated.

"Uniform policy is needed for school children. CM Siddaramaiah has taken the decision against it. Let him wake up and take back his decision. The Congress government is obstinate. Which Muslim leader had asked him to take back the ban on hijab?" Yediyurappa questioned.

"Not able to implement the guarantee schemes, the Congress government is misleading the people. The government has conveniently forgotten about the drought. The decision to lift the ban on hijab should be taken back.

"Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is becoming second Tipu Sultan (erstwhile ruler of Mysuru). It is not tenable to take back hijab ban orders. The Hijab ban is not done by the BJP. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar brought the uniform rule to ensure equality among students," stated BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal in Vijayapura.

"The Hindu students will now wear saffron shawls and tilak. This will create a rift," he said.

Hijab was banned for certain reasons and the High Court upheld this ban. It is not raath gayi baath gayi. Though the Governments come and go, a court's verdict should be respected by the incumnbent government. The present CM has evidentlly got a motive to lift this ban. The CM should give reasons for backtracking this issue.

Please don't bring in the Supreme Court in this matter. What the apex court has said is that the State Government is within its rights to enact this rule. The court does not say about its appropriateness. Now that the new government has taken over with a massive mandate and also making the banning of hijab a poll issue, the new government is well within its rights to lift this ban. Because this was made a poll issue, it has an obligation to remove the ban. Now if Ashoka or Yeddy take this to the court, I am sure, the court will say that this time too, the State Government is well within its rights to undo the law. When you had the mandate of the people you brought in a law, and now when the have people's mandate, they scrapped the law. It is as clear as that. The moral of the story is: don't seek narrow benefits, but do what is good for ALL. ಸರ್ವೇ ಜನಾಃ ಸುಖಿನೋ ಭವಂತು.
