Mangaluru, Dec 24: Canara Educational Institutes held the inaugration ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi Museum on Sunday, December 24 at Canara School CBSE, Mangaluru.

This historical museum was constructed in 1935 and since then it has been a place of learning. And now it has been through renovation and it is completely ready and open for all to visit.

This programme was witnessed by Ramachandra Hegde, while former professor of Ancient History and Archaeology. Murugesh Turuvekere, and Dr V R Shaji from the archaeology department of the government of Kerala were also present as dignitaries.

The  inauguration ceremony was carried out by Sujay Lobo, who contributed towards the refurbishment of the Mahatma Gandhi Museum at Canara School Alumni Association.

Along with Vasudeva kamath, chairman of Canara Administrative Council, M Ranganath Bhat, executive director. Payannur Ramesh Pai, director of the museum, Suresh Kamath, Gopalakrishnan Shetty CA, Vaman Kamath, Basati Purushottam Shetty, and other committee members joined them on the occasion.

After the ceremony the association members said that, "Today it's a wonderful day for all those who have gathered here. I would like to tell everyone that this museum started its construction work in 1934 and it took one and half years for its completion. At that time it was called as 'the Canara High School Museum'.After construction many artifacts were brought here and there was a point when storing artifacts also became a problem. Students and teachers became the beneficiaries of the museum. They said that this inadequate space must be resolved and then everyone came forward and collected money to construct a museum as well as a library."

The committee also said that, "This library was inaugurated then by Lord Erskine who was completely shocked at that moment when he said that he did not expect a high school to have these many artifacts in the museum and a library. At that time there were many books in our library and nearly 8000 books were non-academic ones. At that time the museum was only in the first floor and now despite occupying the ground floor which was a library back then there are still many artifacts kept and stored in different places which will be brought out on special occasions."
