Puttur: Prof Ganesh Bhat Kombraje, vice principal retires after 37 years of service

Puttur, Dec 31: In a career spanning over three decades, Prof Ganesh Bhat Kombraje, vice principal and HoD of Mathematics has left an indelible mark on the field of education, particularly in the realm of mathematics. Born on July 19, 1964, Prof. Ganesh Bhat K embarked on his academic journey at Navajeevana High School in Peradala, where he completed his SSLC in 1979. His pursuit of knowledge continued at St Aloysius College, Mangalore, from 1979 to 1984, where he earned both his PUC and Degree.

Prof Ganesh Bhat K further delved into the world of mathematics, obtaining his MSc from Mangalore University, Konaje, during the years 1984-86. His commitment to the subject was underscored by an M.Phil on FIP (In-service) under Mangalore University in 1994-95.

The veteran educator commenced his teaching journey on July 4, 1986, at Nehru Memorial College, Sullia (DK), simultaneously contributing to KVG Polytechnic and KVG Engineering College as a mathematics teacher from 1986 to 1988. A significant juncture in his career occurred on June 21, 1988, when he assumed the role of the founding Head of Department of Mathematics at St Philomena College, Puttur, under the mentorship of Prof P L Kadambalithaya.

Transferring to Milagres College, Kallianpur, Udupi district, in June 1990 marked a pivotal moment for Prof. Ganesh Bhat K, where he served until August 2003. Returning to St Philomena College, on September 1, 2003, he continued to impart knowledge until his retirement.

In his illustrious 37 years, 6 months, and 10 days of teaching service, with a permanent service duration of 35 years, 6 months, and 10 days, Prof. Bhat wore various hats. Beyond the realm of mathematics, his interests and hobbies include sports such as cho-cho, badminton, and cricket, as well as a deep involvement in cultural activities, including drama and Yakshagana. Notably, he received the ‘Best Actor’award consecutively in the I, II-, and III-year degree college-level annual drama competitions.

As a mathematics teacher, Prof. Bhat ardently focused on popularizing mathematics at the undergraduate level. He organized numerous programs and activities to motivate students in Puttur, Sullia, and Madikeri taluks to pursue higher studies in Mathematics. His contributions extended beyond the classroom as he served as a resource person, delivering guest lectures at various colleges under Mangalore University.

With a keen eye on academic development, Prof. Bhat attended over 25 State/National level seminars and workshops in Mathematics. His leadership was evident in organizing UGC/ISRO sponsored State and National level conferences, symposiums, and workshops on recent trends in specialized areas of Mathematics. Serving as the coordinator of PG studies in Mathematics from 2013 to 2021, he played a crucial role in the achievements of the department, securing three University ranks, including the First rank.

Prof. Ganesh Bhat’s dedication extended to practical aspects, as seen when Mangalore University introduced practicals in UG Mathematics in 2019. He initiated an orientation drive, facilitating all undergraduate colleges to seamlessly integrate Mathematics practicals using open-source software.

His responsibilities in academic bodies are extensive, including serving as a member and chairman of the BOE Mathematics at Mangalore University, membership in BOS in Mathematics for three terms, and participation in BOS of autonomous colleges. Additionally, he has held roles in various academic and cultural organizations, such as the Faculty of Science and Technology at Mangalore University and ‘Ratha Beedhi Gelayaru in Udupi.

Within the college, Prof. Bhat has worn multiple hats, including roles as Science Forum Director, Secretary PTA, Coordinator of the Progress Evaluation Committee, Director of the Students’ Council, Member of the Examination Committee, Staff Secretary, Convener of the Discipline Committee, and Coordinator/Convener of NAAC Criterion-II from the 2nd cycle to the 4th cycle. His leadership as HOD of Mathematics, Dean of Science, and Vice-Principal has been instrumental in shaping the academic landscape.

Married to Vinatha Lakshmi K, an agriculturist, he is the proud father of two daughters, both software engineers. His late father, Shankaranarayana Bhat K, and late mother, Savithri K, played crucial roles in shaping his journey.
