Mangaluru, Jan 6: Mangaluru Rotary Club in association with St Aloysius Institute for Civil Services organised a seminar on 'Civil Services as a Career' on Saturday January 5, at St Aloysius College.

The chief inaugurator of the seminar, Mullai Muhilan M P, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada in his keynote address said, “If the question is why someone should join civil services, I do not have any answer. I was introduced to civil services by my father who was a government employee and until I went to Delhi, I did not know about any other career options. In my PUC, I did not score good marks because of which I did not get an admission in a reputed engineering college with a government seat. At that time, a seminar was organised in our college where I expressed that I aspire to become a collector and that became my nickname for 4 years of my engineering life.

"I was not limiting myself to academics only. I come from a middle class family. As I grew up, my mom always told me to become someone who is praised by his community,” he said.

Addressing the gathering Mahesh Kumar, ACP, Mangaluru city police said, “The DC has said everything and the only message that I would like to give to the students is that choose what is best for you. Do not think that someone else will think for you. Civil services are a form of work where one can help the needy. This is one of the ways where you can connect with the community and bring changes in it. The state of civil services was such that, until I joined the police force, I had no idea about the opportunities of civil services. Looking at how it is changing now, makes us happy.”

Meera Pandit, joint commissioner of commercial tax, admin, DGSTO Mangaluru said, "While many believe that civil services exams revolve solely around reading books, the essence lies in understanding. The interviews are designed to stimulate critical thinking in challenging situations, encouraging candidates to provide innovative solutions for the betterment of society."

She also highlighted the structure of civil services exams and emphasized the key elements that individuals need to be aware of before embarking on the journey of civil services.

This event catered to the students of St Aloysius College Mangaluru from various streams such as arts, science and commerce where they enquired and asked questions to the dignitaries regarding their inspiration and materials to study to prepare for the civil services.

Prominent figures such as Shankarganesh K, additional commissioner of income tax range- 1, Mangaluru along with Kishan Kumar, president of Rotary Club Mangaluru, Dr Siddharth Shetty, secretary of Rotary Club, Dr Praveen Martis SJ, principal, St Aloysius College Mangaluru, and Fr Melwyn Joseph Pinto, rector, St Aloysius College Mangaluru were present.
