Mangaluru, Jan 14: With the intension to provide an insight into a prison and its administration an exposure visit was held by the NSS unit under the leadership of NSS coordinator Abdul Rasheed and department of humanities and social sciences faculty members Dr Sakeena Nasser and Dr Deepa Kotari.

On January 11, a exposure visit to the district prison was organized, in which 63 NSS students along with three faculty members took part.

The visit aimed to understand the administration structure in the prison and to comprehend the living conditions of the inmates. The exposure visit began with visiting the nursery where in organic farming was practiced by the prison inmates, the prison inmates took part in taking care of the nursery and also cultivating many vegetables through organic farming, which was used for the internal kitchen.

Besides vegetables the prison inmates were also educated on mushroom cultivation, which they practiced and cultivated in a small scale. The psychiatric social worker later took the students for a tour around the old prison building this was further followed by an orientation by the superintendent of the police regarding the systems practiced in the jail, the activities conducted in the jail, the officer also clarified the questions posed by the students.

Overall, the exposure visit was a great learning experience to the students, the officers also requested the students to come up with some programmes in future for the inmates on various social issues. .
