New Delhi, Sep 15: It is official now. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and his wife of 17 years, Payal, have finally decided to split for good. The couple has filed for a divorce by mutual consent.
The couple's marriage was reportedly on the rocks as the marital problems forced Payal to move to Delhi with her sons Zahir and Zamir. Also sources have said that on observation, Omar has been avoiding Payal's Akbar Road residence whenever he visited Delhi.
Even though friends close to the couple say that the divorce is based on mutual consent, reports have mentioned two names that are liked to Omar. One of them happens to be a friend and a well known media-person and the other is politician Nasir Aslam Wani's sister who is Jammu and Kashmir's minister of state for Home.
Sources have confirmed that Omar is looking forward to marry the high profile media person but also talks of his wedlock with Wani are on but whether that is the reason for his break up with his wife is still not known.
Omar, one among the more suave politicians of the country, is well regarded in Delhi's social circles. The break up may do little to mar his image in public, but a re-marriage is sure to attract gossip and may not exactly do good to his political career.
