Mangaluru: Man slips, falls to death from coconut tree while extracting palm toddy

Mangaluru, Jan 22: In an unfortunate incident, a man slipped and fell down from a coconut tree and died while extracting Palm Toddy (Neera). This incident happened at a house at Somanatha Ulia, near Netravati River on Monday.

The deceased was Vishwambharan (58), who was the former director of Konaje Moorthedarara Sangha. Vishwambharan, a resident of Dharmastala Pudubettu by origin, was staying with his family at Santhosh Nagar, Ullal here.

He had climbed up the coconut tree this morning as usual near Kuthar Somanath Ulia contracted by him. He unfortunately slipped, fell and died on the spot.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

He had resigned from his post as the director of Konaje Moorthedarara Sangha three months ago and had continued as its member.

Ullal police have registered a case in this connection. His last rites will be held at 9 am on Tuesday, January 23 at his Chembugudde residence and his cremation will be held at the Chembugudde crematorium.

    Very sad news. I used to regularly buy toddy from him. He was nice & humble person. Always smiling face. Hearfelt condolences to his family members. May his soul rest in peace.

    New safety measures should be implemented by toddy tappers to prevent these mishaps. There are only few traditional toddy tappers are left now, better to use safety belts and fall preventing leashes will give new boost for the toddy consumers as they won't have to get adulterated toddy.
