UN Appoints Special Representative for Libya


United Nations, Sep 20 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Britain's Ian Martin as his special representative and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), said a statement.

Martin has until now served as special adviser to the secretary-general on post-conflict planning for Libya, Xinhua reported.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to set up UNSMIL for an initial period of three months to restore public security and order, as well as initiate economic recovery in the North African country.

Martin has also served the UN in other senior capacities, including as head of the headquarters board of inquiry into certain incidents in the Gaza Strip, special representative of the secretary-general in Nepal, special envoy for Timor-Leste, representative in Nepal of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
