Mumbai, Sep 20 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Tuesday climbed further up led by gains in heavyweight stocks like Reliance Industries, Infosys and HDFC.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,768.63 points, was ruling at 17,043.37 points -- up 299.67 points or 1.79 percent from its previous close at 16,745.35 points.
The Sensex had lost 188 points Monday.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading in the green at 5,121.6 points, up 1.78 percent.
Broader markets were also in the positive. The BSE midcap index was trading 0.79 percent higher, while the BSE smallcap index was up 1.02 percent.
The market breadth was positive with 1,770 stocks advancing, compared to 930 on the decline and 98 remaining unchanged.
European stocks too opened in the green, helping buying behaviour.
