New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS): GSM subscribers net addition declined 30 percent with an addition of just 5.34 million subscribers in August compared to 7.65 million subscribers during July.

According to the data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), India's GSM mobile subscribers base grew 0.88 percent in August with the addition of over 5.34 million subscribers, a decline of 30 percent as against 7.65 million additions in July.

While Bharti Airtel and Vodafone reported a significant decline in their net subscriber addition numbers, with net addition numbers dropping to merely 1.2 million and 1.1 million, down 23.8 percent and 24.0 percent as compared to the previous month respectively.

BSNL reported a significant decline in net subscriber addition in August to only 0.4 million against 1.8 million in July 2011.

Idea Cellular though reported a net subscriber addition of 2.3 million as against 1 million in July 2011, up 132 percent month on month.

While the subscriber market share of Bharti and Vodafone remained stable month on month at 28.1 percent and 23.6 percent respectively, that of BSNL declined to 14.8 percent.

Among new operators, Videocon and S Tel reported a net decline of 0.65 mn and 0.1 mn subscribers in their subscriber base, respectively.

Net subscriber addition of Uninor declined by 67.0 percent as compared to the last month as it added merely 0.3mn subscribers.
