Mangaluru: International Mother Language Day celebrated at Mount Carmel Central School

Mangaluru, Feb 22: Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru celebrated the International Mother Language Day on February 21 with great enthusiasm. The students of grade V A and C presented a meaningful and entertaining programme to the students of middle school emphasising on the theme for 2024, “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”.

The programme commenced with a prayer service where children created an atmosphere of serenity with prayers being said in different mother languages followed by scripture reading and hymns.

With a blend of Indian and Western music, the students accorded a warm welcome to the audiences through a scintillating dance performance, followed by words of welcome by Kaitlyn to the chief guest Tr Jenitha Lobo and the gathering. Alan and Jianna enlightened the audiences with the significance of the day.

The importance of mother language was depicted through songs sung in different mother languages along with a colourful presentation of students dressed in different attires replicating different cultures.

The chief guest of the day, Jenitha Lobo, a language teacher at the school, in her speech highlighted the importance of speaking in one’s mother tongue when we gather in our homes or meet together with our family members.

She also focused on how the grandparents feel happy when they find their grandchildren speak in their mother tongue. She enlightened the audience with the importance of preserving one’s mother language, as these days it is observed that many mother languages are disappearing.

She concluded her speech by speaking in different languages including her own mother tongue.

Mount Carmel Central School is indeed privileged to have staff and students from different parts of India with as many as 12 different mother languages and it was a day for the staff and students to cherish their own mother language and respect that of another.

At the end of the programme, Keona proposed the vote of thanks.
