Mangaluru: Circuit House to Bejai Circle road stretch to be renamed after George Fernandes

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 12: Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur announced on March 12 that the road stretch from Circuit House to Bejai Circle will be renamed after the late Padma Bhushan recipient, George Fernandes.

Addressing the media, he stated, "The grand inauguration will take place after the elections. I initially proposed this during Jayanand Anchan's tenure as mayor, and it was subsequently discussed in the council meeting. Following that, the proposal was forwarded to the standing committee, where no objections were raised after its publication. Now, the government has sanctioned the proposal, and the renaming of the road to honour late George Fernandes will soon become a reality.

"There has been a consistent demand from the public to rename the road, supported by Richard Moras from Konkani Lekak Sangh," he added.

"I also want to extend my gratitude to chief minister Siddaramaiah and urban development minister Byrathi Suresh for promptly addressing the request to rename the Late George Fernandes road," he said.

Regarding the water scarcity within the corporation limits, he mentioned, "There is indeed a water scarcity in a few wards. Currently, we have a water level of 6 meters in the dam. I urge people to conserve water, particularly by minimizing vehicle washing. Additionally, we will take legal action, including filing FIRs, against those with unauthorized water connections. If the water level drops at Thumbay, we will request the deputy commissioner to release water from the AMR dam. Presently, we have 6 water tanks supplying water."

Naming the road in the name of George Fernandes should have been done long back. However it is materialised now. We are proud of this .

Greatest and non corrupt politician born in Mangalore, name the kankanady railway station after him or the airport do not rename old road after him. Mangaloreans do not appreciate renaming they address it by their old names.

Wholeheartedly support Sir Fernandes. Let us not forget that he was the best defense minister and was the important interlocutor of Vajpayee for a reason. Let me jump the gun and say that he is one of the best nationalists India produced and at every time he mattered, he exuded maturity demanded from the likes of him to take matters of national security seriously and at level commensurate with his maturity. Most importantly, he sacrificed a lot more than what he enjoyed - true qualities of who hold nation superior than their personal aspiration. OK, you can take side of mill owners, but there is a reason why he prevailed. Let us not forget that.

Maintaining the roads in a good condition should be a priority and not naming after some politician. Also naming should be done as per landmark, and not some person.

Konkan is the name of a geographical region which cannot be named after a person. We want the HQ of Konkan Railway to be shifted to Mangalore and be made a separate division. And the M’lore Central station may well be named after him.
