Indian crew on container ship which rammed Baltimore bridge, US officials laud timely warning

New Delhi, Mar 26 (IANS): The 22-member crew on the Singapore-flagged container ship, which collided with a bridge in the US Baltimore city early on Tuesday, causing it to collapse, were all Indians and all are safe, as per the shipping company.

"Owners and managers of the Singapore-flagged container ship 'DALI' (IMO 9697428) report that the vessel collided with one of the pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Baltimore whilst under pilotage with two pilots onboard, at approximately 01.30 local time on 26th March," the Synergy Marine Group said in a statement.

"All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," it said, listing the crew as "All Indian, 22 in total".

The ship was bound from Baltimore to Colombo.

Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the ‘DALI’ has now mobilised its Qualified Individual Incident response service, it said, adding that the US Coast Guard and local officials have been notified, and the owners and managers are fully cooperating with Federal and State government agencies under an approved plan.

US officials said that the ship crew had reported power issues before the collision and Maryland Governor Wes Moore said they had saved lives by their timely warning, media reports said

Some vehicles and people fell into the water following the collision and a search is on for at least six missing people, as per media reports.

As a Indian citizen we feel so bad when we hear such incidents wherever in the world.Whether they were solely responsible or not.One thing we should remember ,bridges can be built, ships can be built, but when human lives are lost is not possible to bring back .Hope not so many lives were lost.Whatever the cause or responsible person ,they have to answer it.Why they didnt know the height of bridge and their own ships height makes one to think.

@Monty; the vessel had gone "out of control" and it's a standard procedure to give a distress call immediately; the usage of the term "proper timing" is very vague here!! This opinion is not to discredit anyone!!

Please see the number of casualties on such a busy high speed interconnecting bridge, which should give you a very good indication of their emergency response time for any eventuality!! Check out how many casualties were there in the Morvi "recklessness'".... repair contract was in the name of a clock manufacturer.....and compensation???

At the time of collapse workers were repairing pot holes on the bridge, potholes are there all over the world not only on namma pumpwell flyover. I have visited US and I can tell you conditions there are as bad ,if not worse than India in all respects, financial, apartheid, religious intolerance, etc. Mera Bharat Mahaan !!!

Really sad. No lives lost in the ship but those fallen from the bridge? If prior warning of problem was communicated, but still allowed to proceed in the direction of the bridge? It is like prior to 9/11 the French informing the US Intelligence about pilots students in the USA asking the instructor how to divert the planes mid Air, and US officials saying no specific details available. They woke up after 9/11 happened. No connection, but US officials can be too naive and amateur in their response.

The ship was not being piloted by its own crew but by local pilots who are used to specifically avoid accidents.

It's an accident and a coincidence that the container hit one of the main supporting pillars; but please see the lightning speed at which corrective action, after May day call, was taken by the authorities to stop motor vehicular traffic and prevent a major disaster unlike third world places....hope you remember only one Morbi.... also CEO of Boeing is stepping down for the recent..incident....this happens only in the first world place
