Mangaluru, Mar 28: Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru organized a two day scouts and guides residential camp on March 25 and 26 in the school premises.
The inaugural programme began with hoisting the scouts and guides flag by the Colour Party - Guide Neha, Scouts Daniel and Theodore Nikhil. Mr Narayan, ADC, Bharath Scouts and Guides, Mangaluru and PET of St Agnes Special School was the chief guest for the inaugural ceremony. In his address, he congratulated the school and the students for their involvement in the scouts and guides movement and motivated the students to do their best in different activities. Principal Sr Melissa speaking to the campers highlighted the importance of residential scouts and guides camps and encouraged them to participate enthusiastically in all the activities, to build healthy relationships, to maintain discipline and to take care of their personal safety and well being throughout the camp.
On day 1, the scouts and guides were divided into various patrols and were briefed about their duties. Srinivas Chandrashekar Kini, ADC and president, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Mangaluru North wing conducted the first session on Drama, essential skill sets. The students were provided an opportunity to plan scripts and present them. This was followed by an interactive session by Bharatraj K, assistant state organizing commissioner, BSG, Dakshina Kannada who focused on sharing the goals and expectations of the organization.
The students were thrilled to take part in the adventure games along with a planned discovery track specially prepared for them on site. The time was also given for planning and practicing for the evening’s camp fire. Before sunset the colour party assembled to lower the flag with due respect.
In the evening, during the camp fire, the different patrols put up an entertaining programme showcasing folk and traditional dances of India. Guide Harshita and Scout Nathan compered the cultural programme. Scout Ancel welcomed the gathering and Guide Saanvi proposed the vote of thanks. Srinivas Chandrashekar Kini, joint secretary Sr Asha Prima, Principal Sr Melissa and a select audience witnessed the camp fire. The programme ended with energetic mass dance by all patrols around the camp fire followed by a sumptuous meal. Before the lights went off for the night, all were encouraged to make note of the day’s report.
The day 2 began with a trek from the school campus, covering a distance of around 2 km around the vicinity of helipad. The campers completed the BP exercises and explored their new surrounding after which they began their journey back to the base camp. The patrols presented themselves in full uniform and their rooms for an inspection. After a quick breakfast and relishing juicy watermelon the colour party hoisted the flag. A competition on ‘Best from Waste’ was held and displayed by the patrols. Rani Abakka Devi Patrol won the competition and the runner up was bagged by the Subash Chandra Bose patrol.
A session on the basic sewing skills was conducted by teacher Ilona, motivating the students to take up hobbies like stitching, crochet, embroidery instead of only using gadgets. Post lunch, the students met together for a Sarva Dharma Prathana guided by Scout Master Dhanyashree and Guide Captain Ashwitha.
During the valedictory ceremony, principal Sr Melissa awarded the prizes to the winners of various competitions and activities and gave away the campers the certificates for their active participation. Guide Lenora emceed the programme, while Scout Rishal welcomed the gathering and Scout Nathan proposed the vote of thanks.
The activities conducted during the camp aimed to help the students to develop leadership qualities and to foster team building skills. It was indeed a memorable experience for the scouts and guides of Mount Carmel Central School. The camp ended with students relishing the ice cream.
