Udupi, Apr 9: Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Kuntalnagar unit recently organized Volleymania 2024, a diocesan-level inter-parish Volleyball tournament. Held amidst the scenic surroundings of MJ Villa in Thokoli, Kuntalnagar on April 7, the event attracted 16 teams from various parishes across the Udupi diocese, transforming the grounds into a hub of spirited competition and community celebration.
The tournament commenced with an inaugural programme graced by the esteemed presence of diocesan youth director, Fr Steven Fernandes. Addressing the gathering, Fr Steven Fernandes emphasized the pivotal role of sports in contemporary society, highlighting its ability to foster unity and vitality among the youth. The ceremony was further dignified by the presence of Fr Wilson D’Souza, parish priest of Kuntalnagar, Fr Ronson D’Souza, director of ICYM Udupi deanery, as well as key dignitaries including Jacintha D’Souza, the ground benefactor, Stany D’Souza, the VP of PPC Kuntalnagar, Ashley D’Souza, general secretary of ICYM Karnataka, and Godwin Mascarenhas, president of ICYM Udupi diocese.
As the day progressed, spectators were treated to a spectacle of skill and sportsmanship as teams vied for victory on the court. The meticulously planned tournament received widespread acclaim for its flawless organization, providing a platform for players to showcase their talents while fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants.
After a series of exhilarating matches, Pangla A emerged triumphant, securing the championship title, with team pernal securing the runners-up position.
Individual excellence was also recognized, with Prinson Vaz from Pangla honoured as the best setter, Royal Fernandes from Pangla awarded as the Best Attacker, Preetham D’Souza from Udupi hailed for exceptional defensive prowess as the best libero, and Brendon Mendonca from Pernal acclaimed as Volleymania for exemplifying the spirit of the game.
The tournament concluded with a valedictory programme attended by Fr Denis D’Sa, PRO of Udupi diocese, who commended the youth of Kuntalnagar for orchestrating a spectacular event. Fr Denis D’Sa extended his heartfelt congratulations to all participants, emphasizing the invaluable lessons of dedication and discipline learned through sportsmanship.
As participants and spectators united to sing the National Anthem, Volleymania 2024 left an indelible mark, epitomizing the transformative power of sports in fostering community unity and pride. With memories of thrilling matches and newfound friendships, the tournament stood as a testament to the unifying spirit of sportsmanship.
