Ahmedabad, Oct 9: Five policemen were on Sunday October 9 arrested here and soon released on bail in connection with the escape of Sylvester, a prime witness in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
Sylvester escaped from the hands of the Gujarat police when he was taken to Udaipur on Friday October 8 for court hearing. All these days, he was lodged in Vadodara jail.
However, Rajasthan police managed to catch him late on Friday.
It later came to light that Sylvester had been taken to his house in Bhopalpura by the Gujarat police after the hearing, on his request to meet his family. Following this revelation, sub-inspector M Guhil, head constable Ambalal, constables Vijay Babu and Ranchod Bhai and driver Gopal Singh have now been arrested and suspended from duty.
A departmental investigation has also been ordered against them, said Gujarat DGP Chittranjan Singh addressing a press meet.
He ruled out the possibility of the policemen helping Sylvester in his escape bid. He also said that they were drunk and not in a position to prevent him from running away.
Singh further said that Sylvester proceeded towards Ajmer from Udaipur in connection with a land deal. He was arrested on his way back, he added.
