Mangalore, Oct 10: The nursing service department of Fr Muller Medical College Hospital observed 'World Hospice Day' on Saturday October 8. A conference on 'How to give effective care for the terminally ill patients' was held for staff nurses.
Deputy nursing superintendent Darryl Aranha, welcomed the gathering. Chief guest of the occasion, principal of AECS Maruti College of Nursing, Bangalore P Girijamba Devi and chief guest of the programme stressed on the importance of giving palliative care.
In her address, she said that by giving compassionate care nurses would then be like 'Angels' in the lives of the ailing patients. She also added that in order to be seen as 'Angels' nurses should have 5 Hs i.e heart, hand, head, humanity and honesty along with C's of palliative care i.e communication, coordination, control of symptoms, continuity of care, continued learning, care in support and care in dying.
Fr Richard Coelho, administrator of Fr Muller Medical College Hospital and president of the inaugural function delivered the presidential address and focused on the multi-disciplinary approach in palliative care.
Eminent speakers in and out of the institution gave informative talks on various aspects of improving care for the chronically ill.
Dr Naveen Rodrigues, Dr K K Shetty, Cherishma, Mariya, Dr Hasib, Sr Aileen Mathias were the speakers for the day.
The valedictory programme was held in the evening. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners and participants.
