Beltangady, May 5: Vijay Hegde (33), a native of Sirsi and the priest of Sri Durga Kalikamba temple in Savanalu village, tragically took his own life by hanging himself at his residence behind the temple on May 4.

Vijay had been serving as an assistant temple priest for the past 10 years. On Saturday morning, when devotees arrived at the temple, they did not find Vijay. Concerned, they searched his residence and were shocked to discover him hanging.

Known for his simplicity, Vijay kept to himself and was devoted to his duties as a priest. The exact reason for his drastic decision remains unknown.

Just two months ago, Vijay's wife gave birth to a baby boy, and she was staying at her parents' house at the time of the incident. The couple had been married for just a year. Vijay is survived by his wife, two-month-old son, and parents.

The Beltangady police handed over the mortal remains to the family after conducting a post-mortem examination.
