Mangaluru, May 6: Muhammad Noufal, a 26-year-old under trial prisoner from Kasargod, Kerala, ended his life by hanging in the early hours of Monday, May 6, while in judicial custody.
Noufal had been in judicial custody under Konaje Police Station, crime number 109/2022, since December 26, 2022. He had been admitted multiple times to the jail ward of Wenlock Hospital due to complaints of mental depression, with his most recent admission on April 25, 2024.
On Monday, while in the ward under judicial custody, alongside other inmates, he took his own life in the early hours at around 3:40 am. Despite efforts by guards on duty and paramedical staff to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
A case has been registered regarding this incident in South PS UDR No 0037/2024 under section 174. Further legal procedures in accordance with due process are underway.
