Mangalore, Oct 16: Karnataka coast has been experiencing thunder and lightning since the last some days. During the last two days, lightning has claimed two lives and accounted for injuries and damages to properties.

Jayasheela (21), who was leaning on the wall of her house in Hoigegundi in Jadkal village, Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on Thursday night, was struck by lightning. Although arrangements were made to provide her medical treatment at Kundapur immediately thereafter, she had lost her life before she could be treated.

Bifathumma (72), residing near Perandadka mosque in Kashipatna village in Beltangady taluk died due to lightning on Friday. At around 3.45 pm, when she was alone in her house, lightning struck. Bifathumma collapsed to the ground. She died before she could be provided medical assistance in a hospital in Moodbidri. Her home suffered extensive damages. She was preparing to leave for Haj pilgrimage by selling her agricultural lands to her grandson, on the 23rd of this month.

Seetu,  a family member of Govind Artakalu in Ganganadu Onakodlu near Kollur, was injured on Friday evening due to lightning. The house of Mookambu Naik in Kollur also was damaged due to lightning on Friday.

Banks in and around Hebri could not handle banking transactions on Friday, as their equipments were damaged due to lightning which struck the region on Thursday night.

Damages, injuries and deaths due to lightning have also occurred at some other parts of the state.
