Udupi, May 15: The mortal remains of Abhilash (24), who went to rescue his friends drowning in the Shambavi river, were found on the seashore near Baitota in Hejamadikodi on Tuesday evening.

Charan and Guru, along with Rakesh from the coastal police force, discovered the body amidst the sea waves during their patrol. They promptly took action and brought it ashore. Subsequently, the coast guard, police, and Abhilash's family arrived and identified the body.

Ten friends from Bajpe had gathered on Sunday to collect clams along the Shambavi stream. Abhilash, a resident near the old airport of Bajpe Adyapadi and a proficient swimmer, attempted to rescue two drowning friends. While the crew of a fishing boat managed to rescue the two friends, Abhilash tragically drowned and went missing.

Since Monday, Ishwar Malpe and the State Disaster Response Force, with assistance from the coast guard and members of the public, had been conducting search operations at the incident site.

Abhilash was one of three children born to Adyapadi's laborer couple, M M Ramesh and Sharda. He was the only son and a pillar of the family. Just a month ago, his sister's wedding engagement had taken place, while his younger sister is currently pursuing her studies.

Known for his sporting prowess, Abhilash excelled in volleyball and cricket. After completing his ITI in the mechanic department, he had been working on a contract basis with the Railways in Mangaluru for the past four years.
