Mangalore, Oct 17: In an incident that occurred at Bijapur Colony in Karnad Sadashiva Rao Nagar near Mulky on the evening of Sunday October 16, a woman, overcome by emotions said to have been fuelled by misunderstanding, poured kerosene on herself before igniting fire. She died before medical assistance could be extended.

Shivaleela (25) was the wife of Basavaraj, a labourer by profession. Basavaraj had gone to collect his weekly wages. It is said that on his return, he had briefly stayed to talk to a woman neighbour.  Reportedly, Shivaleela, who saw her husband talking to another woman, could not control her emotions. She immolated herself immediately.

Hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to her house and summoned ambulance service. She was carried to Mangalore in the ambulance for treatment, but she had succumbed by then.

A case was registered in Mulky police station. Circle inspector of police, T Basheer Ahmed, and sub-inspector, Rekha Bai, are investigating. The policemen have been informed that both Basavaraj and Shvaleela worked as labourers and often they quarrelled because of misunderstandings.
