Mother of two ends life after online abuse over viral baby incident

Daijiworld Media Network – Chennai (MS)

Chennai, May 21: A woman, mother of two children, hanged herself after severe online abuse following an incident in which her seven-month-old baby slipped out of her hands and fell from the fourth floor while she was feeding the child.

The deceased is Ramya (33), wife of Venkatesh, and a resident of Thiruvarur. She was employed in an IT company and had been suffering from depression due to bullying by netizens after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

The incident occurred on April 28. Ramya was feeding her baby on the balcony of her fourth-floor apartment when the child slipped from her hands and fell onto the metal sheet on the parapet above the first floor, where it got stuck for about 15 minutes. As Ramya screamed, some neighbors rushed to the first floor and rescued the child. Fortunately, the child did not sustain any injuries.

Following the viral spread of the video, Ramya faced severe verbal abuse from her relatives and netizens, accusing her of negligence. This abuse exacerbated her depression, for which she was undergoing treatment.

Two weeks ago, Ramya returned to her house in Karamadai near Mettupalayam with her five-year-old son and seven-month-old baby girl. Her husband and parents had gone to a wedding, and when they returned, they were shocked to find Ramya hanging in the house.

I remember seeing this video which had a happy ending. All neighbours gathered to rescue the child, some standing on the ground below holding bed sheets and placing thick mattresses on the ground. Though the child was saved mother ending her life in such a manner was never expected. Even those neighbours will be disappointed feeling their efforts went in vain.

really sad...people of today's age are very unforgiving....moreover, every individual has to practice stoicism...it will give more self confidence in situations like this...one should love oneself first and dont care much about others..but when living in family it is bit difficult...

My God, its looks like, nowadays people are waiting for some negative issues to commit a suicide, if she was disturbed with negative comments she need to stay away from social media and relatives instead of ending her life, sorry for her innocent kids. our education system must be updated with moral education and problem solving skills, they need to teach how to face the difficulties in life instead of teaching the unnecessary things which will not be useful for us in our daily life.

Very easy to spit sentences here, she only knows what she was going through. Have some sympathy atleast. You will stay away from mobile and relatives, what about the society you live in?. Think atleast before uttering rubbish here.

have you ever interacted with a person undergoing treatment for depression, then you wouldnt have commented that they should stay away from media etc. these people need our support all the time as they are not in a state to think properly.

Yes I was under depression for several years and I took the treatment but I was not decided to end my life thinking regarding the society, please blame the society who failed to support her. according to me this is a silly issue comparing to the issues which I faced.
