Chennai, Oct 20 (IANS): The All India NR Congress (AINRC) Thursday won the Indira Nagar seat in Puducherry while the AIADMK was leading in the Tiruchirapalli West constituency of Tamil Nadu as counting of votes was held for the Oct 13 assembly by-polls.
In the Tamil Nadu seat, at the end of the seventh round, ruling AIADMK candidate M. Paranjothi was leading by 27,606 votes while his nearest rival, DMK's former minister K.N. Nehru, was trailing with over 21,458 votes.
Though 16 candidates were in the fray for Tiruchirapalli West, the main fight was between Paranjothi and Nehru. The by-poll was necessitated by the death of AIADMK's Mariam Pitchai in a road accident in May.
In Puducherry, the ruling AINRC candidate A. Tamilsevane won the Indira Nagar seat by securing 15,053 votes while his closest rival, K. Aroumougam of the Congress, polled 7,007 votes.
The AIADMK had fielded A. Venkateswaran who got 1,578 votes.
The by-poll in Puducherry was necessitated by the resignation of AINRC head and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who chose to retain the Kadirkamam seat.
