Udupi, Jun 4: Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent, an Irish Roman Catholic prelate, serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia visited the diocese of Udupi on June 3.
During his grace visit to Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, along with Bishop of Udupi Diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, vicar general Monsignor Ferdinand Gonsalves and chancellor Dr Roshan D’Souza.
After offering the prayer, Fr Valerian Mendonca briefed the Nuncio about the history of Milagres and the present service rendered by the Cathedral in spiritual and educational fields. He apprised the archbishop that the Milagres Church, founded in 1678, has been the mother parish to the neighbouring Mount Rosary, Kemmannu, Thottam, Udyavar, Brahmavar, Perampally, Kolalgiri, Petri, Barkur and Sasthan parishes. He pointed out the various associations of the parish which contribute to its spiritual growth. He stated that six educational institutions of the parish St Joseph’s Higher Primary School (1892), LVP School (1926), Milagres High School (1931), Milagres P U College (1967), Milagres College (1969) and Milagres English Medium School (1980), serve the society, imparting quality education with spiritual and human values.
The Nuncio, thanked the bishop of Udupi, rector of the cathedral, and the others assembled to welcome him for the cordial welcome. He wished them a fruitful Jubilee Year 2025 and imparted his blessing to the parish and all present.
Fr Valerian Mendonca, rector of Milagres Cathedral, welcomed the Nuncio along with Fr Pradeep Cardoza, assistant parish priest, Fr Manoj Furtado, SFX, sisters of Rose Convent, and parishioners.
