Bengaluru, June 5: Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, who won from Haveri Lok Sabha seat, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi possesses the political acumen to handle any situation.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru on Wednesday following his victory in the Haveri Lok Sabha elections, the senior BJP leader said, "I have been elected to the Lok Sabha under very special circumstances. I contested as per the guidance of the Prime Minister and senior party leaders. Their calculations have been correct."
"Looking at the country, Modi is becoming Prime Minister for the third time. In some places, it hasn't reached the expected level. There is a confidence that Modi will handle any situation," he added.
Bommai said Modi has conducted politics in a very different manner. "He managed the Gujarat riots and despite heavy competition, brought a complete majority. The second time, he increased the majority and expanded the NDA. Looking at all this, he has shown political acumen. The I.N.D.I.A bloc shows no development. Nitish Kumar or Chandrababu Naidu will not rely on Congress," he said.
"Comparing the NDA's performance this time to the last assembly elections, it has been better. The caste question does not arise," he said.
Bommai said Modi was heavily criticised and Congress relied on allies and not on their own strength. He said the Congress won seats due to the strength of its allies. "The BJP's alliance with JD(S) in South Karnataka has been good, and we have received significant votes. People are tired of the government and have supported our alliance," he said.
When asked about Siddaramaiah accusing Modi's guarantees of failing, Bommai responded, "We have achieved success among the guarantees. They claimed they would win 20 seats in Karnataka, but they stopped at 9. The DK brothers lost. They have no moral right to speak,” he added.
