Mumbai, Oct 24 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities Monday shot up in early trade and was ruling about 259 points higher minutes after opening bell.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 17,011.06 points, rose within minutes to rule at 17,044.58 points, up 258.94 points or 1.54 percent from its previous close at 16,785.64 points.
The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading higher, 77.4 points or 1.53 percent up at 5,127.35 points.
Broader markets were also in the green with the BSE 500 index up 1.37 percent. The BSE midcap index was up 1.03 percent, while the BSE small cap index was ruling 0.66 percent higher.
