Puttur, Jun 18: A minor boy is suspected of strangling a woman who died at Darkasu in Biliyooru under Perne gram panchayat limits near Uppinangady.
The deceased is identified as Hemavati (37), daughter of Kamala. Initially, it was reported that she had died of a cardiac arrest on the night of June 16. However, when police arrived for inspection, suspicions arose about the circumstances of her death.
Following a complaint filed by the brother-in-law of the deceased, the Uppinangady police have taken Hemavati’s elder sister’s son, an SSLC student, along with his father and brother, into custody for questioning.
Kamala of Biliyooru had two daughters; Hemavati was the younger one. Hemavati married a youth from Mangaluru after a love affair, but the marriage ended in divorce six years ago. Since then, Hemavati had been living with her mother and working at a canteen in Boluvaru.
Kamala’s elder daughter committed suicide a few years ago. After her death, her husband Shankara and their three children lived in a hut near Kamala’s house. On June 16, Shankara’s second son stayed with Kamala and the deceased Hemavati at their home.
On the morning of June 17, around 6:30 am, Shankara informed a neighbour that Hemavati had died of a cardiac arrest. He also mentioned that his second son had bruises on his body. The neighbors advised him to report the matter to the police. Upon inspection, the police confirmed that Hemavati had been strangled.
The Uppinangady police are intensely interrogating Shankara's second son. They have also taken Shankara and his other two sons into custody for further investigation.
