Islamabad, Oct 26 (IANS): The autonomy of the office of auditor general must be ensured for the sake of accountability and transparency in governance, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said.
Gilani said the auditor general was accountable to the parliament, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.
While talking to Auditor General of Pakistan Akhtar Buland Rana, the prime minister said it was for the first time in the history of the country that autonomy had been given to the office of the auditor general enabling it to discharge its constitutional responsibilities with freedom.
The auditor general briefed Gilani about the working of the office and said it was the eyes and ears of the parliament.
He said autonomy was necessary.
