Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 7: Heavy rains lashed Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts during the weekend.

A tree fell on a car at Golikatte on the Kodaje-Anantadi road, damaging the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Vehicular traffic was affected due to slime on the Kashibettu highway.

Heavy rains deluged Mangaluru city from morning till afternoon, easing later. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for coastal districts from July 7 to 9.

In Udupi district, continuous heavy showers submerged low-lying areas in and around Karkala, Hebri, and Udupi. While rain subsided later, the aftermath led to electricity supply disruptions.

Sea erosion intensified at Maravanthe, with rocks from the retainer wall near Bobbarya Daiva Stana on the road to Maravanthe outer port being washed away by high-velocity waves. The retainer wall is at risk of collapsing, threatening the road itself. Similar concerns arose three years ago during Cyclone Taukte.

Authorities and locals remain vigilant amid the ongoing challenges posed by severe weather conditions.
