Udupi, Jul 10: “As urban populations grow and cities expand, waste accumulation has become a pressing issue” said Rayappa, Udupi Municipal Commissioner.

He was speaking at the Vanamahotsava programme organised by Glowinstar Integrated School, Ambalpady. Commissioner Rayappa highlighted the benefits of converting raw garbage into compost to grow vegetables and crops, and the potential to create useful materials from dry waste.

He emphasised that maintaining cleanliness is crucial in preventing diseases like dengue, which is spreading rapidly due to stagnant water and poor sanitation. He also pointed out the health hazards posed by plastic, noting its link to cancer, and urged for its reduced usage.

"Protecting our environment and preventing water and land pollution should be our top priority," Rayappa stated. He urged teachers to educate students about environmental conservation and stressed the need for personal responsibility in maintaining cleanliness, encapsulating the message with the phrase, "Cleanliness equals godliness."

The event, presided over by school principal Dr T J Quadros, said “To live a happy a life and to live we need to protect our environment. Cleanliness equals godliness. Environment says to take care of it, and indeed it will take care of us. Children should protect and grow more saplings in this regard”.

The programme included practical demonstrations on garbage sorting presented by environmental engineer Sneha and health inspector Manohar. Commissioner Rayappa symbolically inaugurated the school’s Vanamahotsava by planting saplings, encouraging students to plant more trees as part of their commitment to environmental stewardship.

The programme began with an introduction of the guests by School Headmistress Shanta Fernandis. Class 9 student Vedant welcomed the attendees. Prathana D Surna expressed gratitude, and Fadwa Afap compered the programme.
